I was born in Florida and received my Associates degree in Winter Haven, Florida, at Polk Community College. I moved to Tennessee in 1988 to continue my education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I received by Bachelor's Degree in 1991 and my Master's Degree in 1992. I taught 5th grade for one year in Knoxville and one year in Memphis. I began teaching at Pi Beta Phi in 1994 and I have loved every minute of it. (Except for that one kid... Just kidding!) My last degree, ED.S, was earned from Lincoln Memorial University on July 18, 2009.
I was married to Tom Oakley, whom passed away May 29, 2017. I have two wonderful children, Tommy and Lindsay Oakley. My beautiful sister, Carolyn, was disabled and lived with me for 12 years and I lost her on April 10, 2018. I have found that through the sadness "Joy cometh in the morning!" My blessings are through my children, my students and my dog, Scrappy-Doo. He has brought joy to my life and home. Since my children are grown, Scrappy-Doo is now the child that runs the house.
I believe that all children can learn as long as I take the time to find out where the child needs to start in their learning. I want all of my students to learn that they can do anything they set their minds to do. If they put in the time and effort that is required, nothing is impossible.
My name is Mike Tinker, and I am thrilled to begin my 31st year teaching at Pi Beta Phi Elementary School. My educational career includes a Bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee and a Master's degree from East Tennessee State University.
My family includes my wonderful wife Belinda, who is a first-grade teacher at Pigeon Forge Primary School, my oldest daughter Lacee, who is a physical therapist at Pro Therapy, and my youngest daughter Macee, who is a third-year Communications student at UT Knoxville.
